There have been occasional Spotify HiFi signals throughout the year a “HiFi” button may (very briefly) be spotted in the app in May, complete with explanations on using the feature. But on the same day Apple announced its lossless streaming plans, Amazon said it would drop the higher subscription price and include HD quality as part of its regular premium plan. Prior to that change, services like Amazon Music Unlimited and Tidal were asking for an additional premium for the feature. Apple Music launched lossless, high-resolution playback in June, delivering enhanced audio quality at no additional cost. Meanwhile, Spotify’s competitors haven’t waited. Over the next 10 months, those details never came. At the time, Spotify said HiFi would be available in select markets and that the company “would have more details to share soon.” Spotify HiFi, first announced in February, has yet to launch despite the company’s first estimates that it would debut “later this year”. But the largest subscription music service of all, Spotify, seems likely to miss its original goal of launching a higher-quality streaming plan.

2021 will be the year Apple finally embraced lossless music streaming, and prices for hi-fi listening dropped on Amazon and Tidal.
